The effect of water borne nickel on iron metabolism and heme biosynthesis in common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

چکیده مقاله:

Nickel is an essential element for all living organisms such as microorganisms, plants and animals. When nickel concentration exceeds the necessary concentration, could be toxic, and likewise causes adverse effects in living organisms. In this study, following determining nickel LC50-96h for common carp (Cyprinus carpio), nickel sub-lethal treatments including 0 (control), 0.055, 0.275, 0.572, 1.687, and 2.909 mg l-1 was considered over a period of 30 days. The results showed that there was no significant change in hematological indices due to exposure to nickel in common carp. In the presence of nickel, the MCHC showed a significant (P<0.05) decrease compared to the control. While nickel caused a significant (P<0.05) reduction in serum iron and transferrin in treatments of 1.687 and 2.909 mg l-1, transferrin saturation, total iron binding capacity of transferrin, ceruloplasmin significantly decreased (P<0.05) following nickel exposures. The results show that despite the lack of negative effects of nickel on blood indices, this element in the used amounts caused adverse effects on iron metabolism as one of the major components in heme biosynthesis.

Common Carp, Cyprinus carpio

The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) belongs to the family Cyprinidae. In nature, carp live in the middle or lower reaches of a river with slow currents, or in marshes. Their habitats are usually weedy areas with a muddy bottom. Carp fry feed on zooplankton such as rotifers and copepods, but as they grow up they become benthic feeders, feeding on animals and other organic material. The cyprinids h...

Effects of water-borne cadmium on the skin of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio).

The skin of carp, Cyprinus carpio, was studied at the ultrastructural level after exposure of the fish to low and high concentrations of cadmium in the water (22 and 560 micrograms/L, respectively) for different periods. The effects of the low concentration of cadmium were similar to those of the high concentration, although they appeared later. The basal lamina and the skin surface became high...

Effects of Iron Oxide Nano-Particles on the Intestinal Tissue of Common Carp, Cyprinus Carpio

Background: The application of nano-particles (NPs) in various industries is growing. Since their toxicity is not clearly understood, they can cause adverse effects on the environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathological effects of iron oxide nano-particles on the small intestine of common carp, Cyprinus carpio. Methods: Four experimental treatments were designed (15 ...

The effect of transport on biochemical and haematological indices of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.)

The effect of 12 h transport on the biochemical and haematological profiles of three-years-old common carp was investigated. There was a significant increase (P < 0.01) in ammonia, chloride, phosphorus, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase, and a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in total proteins. The levels of glucose (P < 0.01), lactate (P < 0.05), alanine amin...

The Protective Effect of Liquorice Plant Extract on CCl4-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio)

The protective effect of liquorice plant extract (LPE) on CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in common carp was evaluated using fifty adult carps. The fish were cultured in a standard environment in terms of water flow rate, oxygen, pH, food and temperature. The fish were assigned into 5 groups (N = 10) as control, sham, and tests. The test groups were pre-treated for 3 h with various concentrations o...
